Joy is timeless: Dino’s BMW 520 E12 1977 on BBS RS

You have your regular classic BMW enthusiasts, then you have your proper old BMW nut cases, and then at the top of the tree you will have Mr. Dino RS. Never have I met personally someone with this much adoration for the humble german car. Since Dino started to drive, he has adopted several BMWs in his life. Most of them are old, but the build journal was written well in Dino’s hand.

As for where Dino’s heart lies, it is a bit hard to nail down, but he’s happy to admit that BMWs came as his first love. In the hunt for his first classic car at that time, it was German steel that stole his passion. He said to us that, ” I grew up on the back seat of a BMW,” says Dino. “Both of my parents fall in love as well with BMW. So lots of memories there. “I figured that some of the people underestimate the ability to survive with an old European cars, but I had none, none big issues to taking care of.” said Dino.

One of his projects began with this flawless BMW 520i E12 1977 Euro Spec version. Dino found this car at the first time still in pretty good shape, and without a doubt, he brought this car once negotiation price were met. If we talking about this sedan, when it was launched in 1970s, the 5-Series was tasked with building on the success of the legendary ‘Neue-Klasse’ saloons that did so much to cement BMW as a top-line motor manufacturer. It’s fair to say that it not only met those expectations but went on to carve a prosperous future for the German company. It was so successful that the current models really are direct descendent.

You can see on this page, Dino has tackled every upgrade and modification himself – especially when it comes to the wheels choice. And I’m not talking about mundane jobs here, but the sort of custom ideas that has turned his E12 into one of the coolest BMW E12 alive on the streets of Jakarta-Indonesia. In her 2nd years since, this lady has received numerous levels of attention, as Dino’s interest shift from this car to another classic german cars that he owned as well.

In the early years, Dino did a total body restorations while his eyes never closed on finding the rare and factory additional body kit on internet. Dino took the steps to bought and install the front add-on lips specially made for E12 back then. One the parts on this E12 that was uber rare is the BBS trunk spoiler that again, is specially made for this car is installed on this green E12.

The suspension received another round of changes. The first idea was to install an air suspension, but Dino said that the bag hits the inner fender though. But his desire to got a tucked wheels inside with mild drops was unstoppable. This time in the form of shortened strut housings, custom springs, and taller rear shock mounts, all helping to adjust suspension lengths to lowering the car without hassles on ride quality.

The wheels on this E12 are absolutely beauties; a set of BBS RS 212 which upconverted from 17 inch to 18×8.5 fronts and 18×9.5 rears, in low offsets – filling out the E112’s guards and tucked nicely, with a bit of a pulled and rolled. The wheels are absolutely transformed the whole look of the car, and other people’s perspectives on the car and what it represents. Gold faces, slanted lips, decent drops are definitely win, win, and win.

Another big step that being taken to this car was the Stromberg Double carburetors on the engine side, along with the upgrades on ignition and exhaust system, Dino was able to meet great power gains in his E12 compared to stock power.

As Dino lived in the car to and from work and on the weekends, the decision to make things a bit more comfortable for himself and passengers was made without sacrificing his dreams on this E12. The original front seat were taken out and changed to pristine Recaro LS 81 classic seats while the door trims still untouched, but it’s definitely matched perfectly with the presence of Recaros. The excitement of hunting season was generating its result to Dino that obtained the classic BBS 3-spokes steering wheels for his lady. After all, with the car in a raised position, its aesthetic is reserved and classic, the Dino’s proper taste provides an era-correct look to an otherwise understated car.

In our eyes personally, Dino has shown its shines and loves to this car. As one of only a few who have taken an E12 down the path he has, his car perfectly represents the ways that how wheels, originality, passion, and endless efforts can accentuate an otherwise flawless car. And to cap it all off, Dino tells us that he has bagged 7-Series that still being restored which we hope that he can share with us in the future. Why? This feature has been in the works for weeks now, not only because of the 4000+ miles that are between us but also the chance barrier. What’s important is that we finally have just enough information and photos to share with you all, our lovely readers. You’re looking at one of our best friend in Jambi, Okki Praja and his slammed Honda Civic FD1 that he improvised every chance he gets. We’ve been through to his car last year, and you can refresh your mind to see his previous build here. Everyone agree and believe that this kind of platform is one of the best stance weapon that will ever had. Subtle exterior looks, plenty of aftermarket parts, and tremendous source of style in internet that you can’t resist to modified it. If this boosted blue FD1 doesn’t satisfy your needs, we seriously do not know what will.

So, why almost Honda Civic line are a favorite among people who loved mods (especially the ones in high school and college) and throughout the younger crowd? It does have the looks, striking and appealing looks. It has the really good sex-appeal, that brand appeal from a Honda and that one can blend well inside the lifestyle with a Honda in every country that you knew before. Maintenance costs are attainable and fuel consumption is friendly to the daily allowance. And as we mentioned earlier, for those car enthusiasts, the Civic is a modifiers dream, therefore they can simply purchase aftermarket parts at affordable prices to have cool rides and those parts are obtainable.

Here is how it all went down. Okki’s old paint were no longer exist, so he started to look at other color options. Okki contacted several paint shop and ended with custom blue paint by De Beer, because nobody had these paint especially on FD’s. Finally Okki was able to work out a great deal on repaint his lady and he ended up by adding Mugen RR bodykit to be implanted on his new color. He knew that he was in for some body work to make them fit the way he wanted them to. After several months, he added more touch on his lady off. From putting carbon trunk, custom spoiler lips, and his innovation on fender work to gave more impression. He now has beautiful paint and perfect fitment on his FD and he can’t be happier than this.

The wheels are another important point on the car. Almost as great as the shiny exterior, there is no denying that the old three piece BBS RS wheels are a bold choice. But bold is what this car is all about. The intricate design, and 100% mesh design brings another taste to who starring at this car. Sized up at 17×9 up front, and a steamroller sized 17×10 in the rear. Okki also added Skunk camber kit to allow tyre tucked inside the fenders. Now when it comes to impressive fitment on FDs, we’ve seen it all, and Okki’s FD1 certainly will duke it out with the best of them. His fender lips are most certainly resting between the wheel lips and tires. While plenty of stance cars roll on comfy pillow bags, this lady sits on static custom suspension at each corner. He explains, “this suspension actually allows me to drive hard the car and pull it out” said Okki.

Through this year we have seen loads of builds some favoring form and while others went for function. There are a lot of car enthusiasts across our lovely country-Indonesia that would rather have more in “form format” over the “function format”. Well one of our friend, Angga Raditya, the owner of this struggles-built E30 M40, would have to disagree and show people why they should choose the sleek-but-functional over form for him selves. Di tengah-tengah jenuhnya E30 yang modifikasinya kayak template (setidaknya menurut gue pribadi), gue pengen cari yang lain. Enggak M-Tech, enggak Recaro-an, enggak ini, enggak itu. Pengen beda. Lagian sudah banyak banget E30 yang maksimal di Indonesia. Makanya gue browsing internet dan ketemu info kalau E30 itu punya interior merah yang namanya Cardinal Rot. Gue langsung suka dan gue yakin belum banyak yang pakai warna ini.

Berhubung gue berteman baik dengan bos Vertue Concept, Edy, gue tantangin buat konversi interior E30 gue, dari abu-abu jadi merah ala Cardinal Rot. Edy pun dengan senang hati meladeni. Walaupun banyak yang bilang sayang banget karena bahan interior gue orisinil. Tapi gue tahu kualitas pengerjaan Vertue Concept pasti bagus, jadi menurut gue bakal worth it. Nappa Edelweiss Stigma warna merah langsung membalut interior, dan gue lebih puas dengan kondisi seperti ini. Cocok sama gue, yang selalu pengen punya ciri khas. Gue narsis, dan gue bangga.

Interior kelar, gue bingung mau ngapain lagi. Gue nongkrong lagi sama teman-teman gue di daerah Bintaro, sambil makan sate. Dari situ gue iseng tanya ke teman gue yang pegang BBS RS 16x(8,5+9,5) inci. Boleh enggak barrel nya gue bayarin? Tanpa diduga, doi mau melepas barrel nya ke gue. Wah ini dia, bakal hits velgnya kalau pakai barrel doi. Karena kesibukan kerjaan gue, baru beberapa bulan barrel ini bisa terpasang. Dan proses pemasangannya enggak gampang, karena 2 set ban 195/50R16 gue bocor samping semua pas ditarik. Alhasil gue beli ban baru dengan ukuran 205/45R16 dari Accelera Alpha. Masalah ban beres, tinggal pasang adaptor, ukuran 25 mm di depan dan 32 mm di belakang.

Spek velg gue setelah ganti barrel, offset¬nya menjadi 16×9 inci offset 35 di depan dan 16×9,5 inci offset 41 di belakang. Sudah pasti mentok dalam, makanya kudu adaptor. Final offset setelah adaptor menjadi offset 10 di depan dan 9 di belakang. Spakbor mesti gue gerinda sedikit biar bebas gesrot. Konstruksi suspensi trailing arm E30 di belakang membantu gue dengan camber otomatis¬nya, membuat lebar 9,5 inci nyemplung aman di dalam spakbor. Yang depan enggak masalah, seimbang sama fitment belakangnya.

Buat ducktail alias heckspoiler, gue pakai Hartge yang sejatinya buat E30 generasi awal, yang masih M10. Ducktail ini dari teman gue, katanya daripada nganggur di rumah mendingan dipakaikan ke mobil gue dulu. Rejeki? Amin. Ducktail Hartge punya juntaian tinggi, sehingga buritan gue juga harus eksotis buat imbangin. Karena itu gue pakai muffler tip dari Sebring yang gue custom lagi. Bentuk knalpot ala DTM cukup mainstream di penggemar E30, makanya gue custom. Gue lagi suka banget sama JSutai, maka knalpotnya gue bikin ala JSutai. Kromnya dimatikan, ampelas, gue siram hitam dan gue tambahin aksen hijau turquoise pakai cutting sticker.

And the result is, I am satisfied with my E30. Dan sejak itu, BMW kesayangan gue ini enggak melulu keluar garasi. Bukan karena ceper, atau ada kerusakan. Tapi karena A/C-nya enggak dingin. Gue malas pakainya. Occasional only. Hahaha… Well, that story of my E30. What I got from my E30 was, narcissism can bring you to optimism, which can lead you to be creative.
