Joy is timeless: Dino’s BMW 520 E12 1977 on BBS RS

You have your regular classic BMW enthusiasts, then you have your proper old BMW nut cases, and then at the top of the tree you will have Mr. Dino RS. Never have I met personally someone with this much adoration for the humble german car. Since Dino started to drive, he has adopted several BMWs in his life. Most of them are old, but the build journal was written well in Dino’s hand.

As for where Dino’s heart lies, it is a bit hard to nail down, but he’s happy to admit that BMWs came as his first love. In the hunt for his first classic car at that time, it was German steel that stole his passion. He said to us that, ” I grew up on the back seat of a BMW,” says Dino. “Both of my parents fall in love as well with BMW. So lots of memories there. “I figured that some of the people underestimate the ability to survive with an old European cars, but I had none, none big issues to taking care of.” said Dino.

One of his projects began with this flawless BMW 520i E12 1977 Euro Spec version. Dino found this car at the first time still in pretty good shape, and without a doubt, he brought this car once negotiation price were met. If we talking about this sedan, when it was launched in 1970s, the 5-Series was tasked with building on the success of the legendary ‘Neue-Klasse’ saloons that did so much to cement BMW as a top-line motor manufacturer. It’s fair to say that it not only met those expectations but went on to carve a prosperous future for the German company. It was so successful that the current models really are direct descendent.

You can see on this page, Dino has tackled every upgrade and modification himself – especially when it comes to the wheels choice. And I’m not talking about mundane jobs here, but the sort of custom ideas that has turned his E12 into one of the coolest BMW E12 alive on the streets of Jakarta-Indonesia. In her 2nd years since, this lady has received numerous levels of attention, as Dino’s interest shift from this car to another classic german cars that he owned as well.

In the early years, Dino did a total body restorations while his eyes never closed on finding the rare and factory additional body kit on internet. Dino took the steps to bought and install the front add-on lips specially made for E12 back then. One the parts on this E12 that was uber rare is the BBS trunk spoiler that again, is specially made for this car is installed on this green E12.

The suspension received another round of changes. The first idea was to install an air suspension, but Dino said that the bag hits the inner fender though. But his desire to got a tucked wheels inside with mild drops was unstoppable. This time in the form of shortened strut housings, custom springs, and taller rear shock mounts, all helping to adjust suspension lengths to lowering the car without hassles on ride quality.

The wheels on this E12 are absolutely beauties; a set of BBS RS 212 which upconverted from 17 inch to 18×8.5 fronts and 18×9.5 rears, in low offsets – filling out the E112’s guards and tucked nicely, with a bit of a pulled and rolled. The wheels are absolutely transformed the whole look of the car, and other people’s perspectives on the car and what it represents. Gold faces, slanted lips, decent drops are definitely win, win, and win.

Another big step that being taken to this car was the Stromberg Double carburetors on the engine side, along with the upgrades on ignition and exhaust system, Dino was able to meet great power gains in his E12 compared to stock power.

As Dino lived in the car to and from work and on the weekends, the decision to make things a bit more comfortable for himself and passengers was made without sacrificing his dreams on this E12. The original front seat were taken out and changed to pristine Recaro LS 81 classic seats while the door trims still untouched, but it’s definitely matched perfectly with the presence of Recaros. The excitement of hunting season was generating its result to Dino that obtained the classic BBS 3-spokes steering wheels for his lady. After all, with the car in a raised position, its aesthetic is reserved and classic, the Dino’s proper taste provides an era-correct look to an otherwise understated car.

In our eyes personally, Dino has shown its shines and loves to this car. As one of only a few who have taken an E12 down the path he has, his car perfectly represents the ways that how wheels, originality, passion, and endless efforts can accentuate an otherwise flawless car. And to cap it all off, Dino tells us that he has bagged 7-Series that still being restored which we hope that he can share with us in the future. Why? Because it’s simply that we’re eager to say the least. If you ask us, more people now should get into this style of modification with their old school ladies – it’s vintage perfection.

Private indulgence: Ricky Ibrahim’s Audi A6 C8 on Work Durandal

A subtle approach to modifying is something we can all appreciate it. An OEM+ builds are all the rage these days after all in Indonesia. There are those out there, however, who enjoy giving a firm two-fingered salute to all that softly-softly modifying non-sense while one of these people is Ricky Ibrahim, as he proves with his Audi A6 C8 2013. Having had several interesting motorcycles like Harley Davidson, like the magnificent Road Glide Ultra, etc, it’s pretty easy to tell that Ricky was a truly an auto enthusiasts who loved sophisticated dreams and things.

This moment actually captured when our brother, Alwafi Auzan traveled back to Padang to spent Holy Ramadhan several weeks ago. Basically, we already noticed an appearance of this hot Audi A6 on our Instagram feed. Her luxuriousness, stance, and equipped with our most personal favorite wheels from Work Wheels – Durandal, successfully catches our intention here in Ladyonwheels. Knew that the owner lived in Padang, West Sumatra, we contact Alwafi to spare his time to look after this car.

As you may expected on this today article, it didn’t take long for Ricky as an enthusiast to begin sourcing parts for the A6. With helps from Andra from Platinum Auto Workshop, who easily became an architect of this build.

Let’s be honest, I don’t think any of us can say that what he did is far from such a “good” word. Dare we say it, this Audi A6 is a definite grower. The aggressive S-Line bodykit do a lot for the “Six”. It’s quite a fantastic-looking piece of kit.

Another step of this build was the wheels; a sexy Work Durandal with 19×10.5-11.5 successfully gives a perfect line to this Audi. A perfect combination with 4 channel air struts, and double compressor from Universal Air to laying down it’s frame to the ground. With help also with custom front and rear camber kit to minimizing the chance of rubbing tires while rolling.

Subtle isn’t really a word that could be applied to this Audi A6 – yet with a multitude of touches that show great attention to detail, as well as the in-your-face stance and crazy soundtrack, it just works so well. The continued growth of car culture in Indonesia is pretty intriguing one. What we featured here in ladyonwheels as just a part of that significant growth toward passion and styles by couple of people in Jakarta-Indonesia especially. In its infancy, stance and fitment style sometimes lacked its true understanding by several car enthusiasts. Basically we collected ideas from whatever we saw on the internet, and some of the styles they attempted to reproduce weren’t always what true sweet fitment culture was about.

Today, USDM, JDM, stance-fitment and OEM+ style fanatics in Indonesia starts to adapt those types styling in every single day. The lines of communication are plentiful and a lot of enthusiasts here are loved to share its knowledge, photos, video, and more whenever needed to accomplish their build. For example, do you remember Mr. Uwi Krisna with his VW Golf Mk1? He has been featured here twice because of his consistency on his build and keep sticking to fancy USDM styles. Okay, back in topic today, Toyota Soarer is one of the car that you just can’t see it every day, and really needs no words to describe just how amazing it really is. One look to this 1992 Soarer, and it’s obvious that nothing too much on this car. From the customized fender work, body kit, wheels, and snugged ride height. Everything comes together to create a nice look on this platform.

What you see on our article today might seem a bit “simple” for many of you who regularly encounter modified Toyota Soarer (especially in super wide fitment or even drift’s scene). As I mentioned earlier, in Indonesia, it’s pretty rare to see this platform. Most Soarer in here are typically a garage troves or race or drift-themed vehicles that seen on track. We’d be surprised if we woke up one day and expected to see a clean Soarer that was touched for cleanest look. It’s not like others who loved to pull their wallet limits for heavily modified Soarers, not until we met Steven and his Toyota Soarer onto our desk.

According to several reviews and facts, Toyota launched the Soarer and its Lexus equivalent in the early 1990s. It was designed in America and aimed at affluent Americans who wanted a stylish well built and fully equipped coupe. For the Japanese market, it was badged as a Toyota, the Soarer to be precise, and was conceived as a sporty model, but on the other side of the western hemisphere, it carried the Lexus badges of Toyota’s premium brand and was a luxury model. Steven’s Soarer has the quad-cam 4.0-litre 1UZ-FE V8 engine as the same engine as the Lexus had. Ive driven kind of Soarer several years ago, and it’s a silky smooth unit that is equally at home cruising around clogged city streets as it is at speed on the open road. Most Soarer for Indonesia have a four-speed electronic automatic gearbox, but the 2.5 GT-T is also available for a five-speed manual gearbox but with 1JZGTE turbo engine. Independent suspension was under both ends, with coil springs on earlier cars and airbags on later ones. What a nice revving-happy sport luxury car ever made by Toyota at their era.

But suddenly Steven said that he have not changes anything with the car yet. Its reasonable when he said that he just bought this car couple months ago, including all the mods parts. He said that when bought this car, he considered several points such as good body condition, fresh interior, and came up with pretty nice Varrstoen wheels as starter, before he begin his build to make this car looks better than its initial condition. We’ll start off with the exterior. Steven’s soarer strikes that perfect balance of being aggressive without being too off-the-wall crazy. He realised that several bodykit brands or companies love this chassis, and there are some seriously wild kits out there for these cars that transform them into something that doesn’t really look like a Soarer anymore. Best thing is the previous owner prefers the stock lines thankfully, however beefed up of course. The front and rear bumper added with custom lips, while the front fenders got some vents to draw how beast this car is. I really like how the front bumper and those vent’s fenders flow well together, their cutaway design really driving home that track feel, and the rear over fenders give it extra safe when Steven planned to order some nice wide wheels.

At the suspension system, Steven thankfully received several branded parts such as front upper arms, roll center adjuster pillow lower arms, rear camber adjuster, rear toe arms, traction rods, those came from IKEYA FORMULA brand. Paired with those stabilization parts, an ISC Coilover planted in all four fenders. Those are actually a really great bargain to start working with this car. Steven planned to change this old Varrstoen wheels in the future. This varrstoen has really nice spec,  measured at 19 9.5-10.5″ with +22 offset all around. To optimized the braking system on this soarer, the OEM Mk4 Supra brakes has been implanted well along with Project Mu brake pads.

Inside cabin, the OEM+ theme continues. The original driver and passenger seats are still preserved. Extra grips while driving comes courtesy of a Nardi steering wheel. Rests, all in good stock OEM condition. Steven also re-trimmed the interior with black color to gives a nice clean interior.

If there was one car that epitomized a simple old sport car culture in Indonesia, this Steven’s Soarer would be the good example. Steven said also that he had numerous plans to start with this beauty in the future, but now he only wants to drive it as is. Thanks for reading guys.

The rolling diaries car: Bey’s Mercedes Benz W114 on Rial Mesh Type A

A scarce innovation, every business or even culture depends on it. From huge industries, companies, magazines, websites, pretty much everything thrives on a great innovation. We’re constantly wanting the newest and latest innovation, or something unusual that will comes out coincided with several boring stuffs. Simply said, innovation is generally a good thing as it means moving forward. The Indonesian car scene certainly thrives on progression, innovation and publications. We are striving to bring the features on what’s new or on something interesting. When it comes to the classic culture, there is lots of innovation going on. As classic US style becomes significantly popular, Mr. Bey with his infallible Mercedes Benz W114 is working hard to innovate its own take on the art of classic-sedan customization and standing on top.

Basically this feature occurred when our brothers Alwafi Auzan, Daniel Bramantyo, and Arief from @properinch invited to the annual Cargasm meet up in Bandung-Indonesia. For those haven’t seen Cargasm coverage, you can click here to begin. We have seen several classic cars in that great meetup, ranging from an old school Mini Cooper, Datsun, and also this beauty Benz that seized our attention. After we finished all duties to captured a car’s heaven in Cargasm meetup, we decided to calling Bey and asked him to be featured as well.

Basically the classic Mercedes Benz W114 is an interesting platform to work with. Its style lends itself to a diverse selection of potential directions. Mercedes Benz attributed much of the classy design inspiration for the W114 to the 70’s finest people who demanding a luxury on their lifestyle. The new generation, mid-range Fintail replace- ment surfaced in 1968, but was more than a re-shell. Mercedes don’t do thing by halves, so in came an all-new chassis type with styling like the ‘65 250/280 plus new semi trailing rear suspension and revised engines and more, including coupe versions. These cars may have been extremely expensive when new at 1970’s, but as a cultured classic are now as cheap as chips. Cheap isn’t a reason for Bey to not driving a Mercedes Benz, he consistently drive several line of Mercedes Benz cars since he was young. Owning a classic W114 this day makes Bey stands among other friends and competitors.

Bey from ASALVO autoclub became quite familiar with the concept of hard work during the build process of his 1975 Mercedes Benz W114. With a helps from FA Autoworks-Bandung, this garage said that Bey’s W114 was in good shape, but still requiring considerable attention before it could be deemed roadworthy. Due to the fancy plans for the vehicle, Bey asked Franky, the owner of FA  Autoworks  to repaint her lady with Orange color from Sikkens. Needless to say, actually his plan did not fit the definition of what one would call a ‘factory restoration’ in term of paint, but definitely this classy Benz easily recognized as timeless roadstar with this looks.

Despite the clean, factory appearance of the Benz, the exterior of this classic W114 has been modified extensively as well. The front and rear lightsis converted to one from a American W114 model for an updated look. An almost brand new all body lists, seals, and chrome bumpers is also present, adding strength to the overall looks of her. With those exterior combination, the car looks really great, far from the truth that this platform is suitable to be collected by the old fashioned people.

In the interior side, Bey contrived to let them in original condition. Seemed Bey wants to shown up his fancy side only on the exterior, nothing in interior then. When it comes to FA Autoworks, the interior side is far from perfect condition, with torn leather, dirty untidy panels, and the interior in  a bit disarray, it was time for a complete restoration inside the cabin. The dash was removed and wrapped with black leather as the instrument panel cable was also repaired. Details ranging from the steering wheel to the switches were polished,painted, and re-wrapped to achieve a comfort and classic looks. Like magic, an old ratty interior soon became one that emanated with craftsmanship and Bey was able to focus on the fitment and wheels option for his lady.

Determining the best wheel offset to produce a certain look is not important for this kind of car, however, sometimes Bey put more efforts to find the best looks of an old school wheels rather than addressing on choosing the big negative offset. In order to attain his desired wheel, a Rial Mesh Type A wheels with 16×8″ size all around chosen to filled all guards. Unlike another popular modern chassis, aftermarket suspension solutions are not plentiful for the W114. A combination of custom suspension are employed to provide the stance.

Lastly said, Bey would like to express thanks to FA Autoworks, Cargasm friends, and ASALVO autoclub for all their workmanship and support throughout the years. In essence, the result is much better than his expectation. Bey built this W114 with the intentions to change the negative stigma about an old fashioned people that sometimes follows the W114 and to change everyone’s opinion of this car. We feel Bey succeeded, and we love that people are taking notice to his car and it’s getting the attention it deserves.

 

Stick to the classics: Uwi Krisna’s Golf Mk1 Cabriolet on Schmidt TH Line

Today we are happy venturing once again, all the way to one of the craziest Volkswagen enthusiast, to check out his another ride that we are pretty sure all of you have seen this rabbit before. This particular 1980s Golf, nicknamed by ‘Rojali’, is owned by Uwi Krisna, who has owned it for several years, and in those years he has definitely finished on applying his own classy style to the goddess Volkswagen Golf Mk1 Cabriolet. This build is completely took countless efforts and time, proportional budget, daily purpose, with friends and family helping along the way, which we thought is just the way it should be. You guys maybe want to relapse your memory about his previous built is available here. Basically, we often heard that the people built on something unique and different makes this hobby so enjoyable. There are all kinds of enthusiasts, from non aesthetic modified cars, OEM+ style, stance and fitment, then a classy classic who happens to own this beautiful rabbit.

Its very common when you meet new friends in this car communities, they are sometimes easily recognized by their cars, not their names. It’s a strange phenomenon by the way, but it comes with the territory. For example, in our address books, usually last names are replaced by car names.  The car names seem to serve the memory better though. Once we got called, for example, “Hey buddy, this is popo.”, “Popo?”  “Yeah man, Popo with the Mini Enkie.”  “Oh, got it!”  What we drive identifies who we are. He is known also as “Uwie Golf” to many of his friends in this community. But anyway, we contacted him to arrange a photoshoot and videoshoot because it saw from his instagram account that this Rojali has been finished and looks so pretentious. Uwi received our offers and agreed to came to the decided spot on the next week after.

At first, Uwi thought that restoring the old MK1 engine is so painful in Indonesia, so he swapped his engine from ZC SOHC Honda Engine including its OEM 4 speed auto transmission to make sure that he can fully enjoy the driving experience with his rabbit without any business on his left feet. To be honest, we dont have much time to learn more about his engine built, because we got spelled from what we look on this car. A very precision build and in a right way as well. If we see today, it’s been 35 years since VW’s Golf GTI was introduced and in that time, it’s accumulated one of the most fiercely loyal followings of any model, won countless international awards and racked up to millions sales worldwide. Once we discussed about this first generation of Golf, by driving this old rabbit simply makes you feel good for sure. The reasons are easy to understand. After years spent in the modern cars, the 360-degree greenhouse, tremendous natural lighting, and an old school interior offer salvation for the enthusiast soul. “It’s involving, and brilliant, and tremendous fun to drive.” Uwi said.

Being a self proclaimed of wheel, this rabbit wheels immediately caught our eyes. Personally I’m a sucker for full faced or dished wheels and these of course snagged my curiosity. “The first ever set produced of Schmidt TH Line Cup in 4×100 in Asia,” Uwi said. Its coming in at 15×7 inch at front and 15×8″ at rear, respectively. Its wrapped also with Achiles ATR 165/50/15 tires at all wheels. Uwi left its original high polished color in this classy wheels to support his rabbit’s appearance. What a perfect combination.

In purpose to repair his original soft top, Uwi replaced it with Haartz soft top with nice vintage squared red as its lining. The overall styling of this golf mk1 is totally period-correct, with a strong influence from the vintage cars of the era. An OEM VW Cabby third brake lamp, body lists, and front grill, Golf Gti side mirrors, Gti badge, Kamei front spoiler and air scoop are fitted perfectly with the nice and fresh red paint on whole exterior. Nothing is aesthetically out of place and Uwi has done a great job of preserving the essence of the car.

Uwi Krisna has built an eye catching, attention grabbing classic Volkswagen Golf MK1 for his second time, and he can take pride in the fact that he loved all his rabbits for no one but himself, with his own style and attitude fused into it. A car is meant to be driven and enjoyed, and the fact that this Golf MK1 was built up by friends and family support makes it that much more enjoyable. When it’s all said and done, the philosophy that someone chooses when building a car is of little importance. We’ve always found that the best project cars were built by an owner who was more concerned with his own expectations rather than the expectations of others. It’s a “can’t-miss” strategy that people from both sides can appreciate. You can say what you want about Uwi’s rabbit, but it can never be argued that he did it his way and style.
